One of the most unique sub-genres of rock ‘n’ roll is jam band music. While the sub-genre itself does not have one sole creator, the main band that helped introduce jam band music to the masses was the Grateful Dead. We could digress and go off on a tangent regarding its “true origins.” However, that is a discussion for another time. What is undeniable is that the Grateful Dead introduced this method of playing and style of music to the mainstream.
After Grateful Dead disbanded in 1995, the world of jam band music seemingly had an asteroid-sized hole left in its soul. However, at the time of Dead’s breakup, several bands had already helped carry the torch. Since then, several others have joined the cause. That being said, here are three jam bands keeping jam music alive in a post-Grateful Dead era.

Phish
Founded in 1983, Phish is probably the second most popular jam band of all time behind The Grateful Dead. As of now, they are likely the most popular living jam band on the planet. Thanks to their songs “My Friend, My Friend”, “The Mango Song”, and “Bouncing Around The Room”, Phish established themselves as the premier force keeping jam band music alive and well.
Like The Dead, Phish have a staunch fan base and a general culture that is one of the most unique in all of music. When one is discussing 21st-century jam band music, as we all do, Phish is certainly on top of the list as the most popular band of the sub-genre.
Goose
When it comes to jam bands, Goose is certainly one of the newer additions to the sub-genre. Founded in 2014, Goose reminded listeners that jam bands are here to stay, and they did so by mixing the old with the new. In other words, they helped revamp the sub-genre during a time when it needed it most.
Some of their more notable work includes “Arcadia”, “Madhuvan”, and “Hungersite”. However, don’t expect to hear the same song twice, as these guys, like most jam bands, rarely play the exact same arrangement twice. After all, one of jam music’s most appealing attributes is its variety.
Billy Strings
While Billy Strings is most often associated with the bluegrass genre, he is also an integral player in the jam band music scene. Ultimately, what has scored Strings this association is his flawless improvisational skills and general on-stage disposition. Also, it helps that a Billy Strings song can range anywhere from three to 15 minutes.
Billy Strings does, in fact, teeter between bluegrass and jam music. However, thanks to his contributions to both genres, he his quickly bridging the gap between the two. In modern music, there is truly no other musician like Billy Strings. Strings gained a large following after his single, “Dust In A Baggie“, became a viral sensation on YouTube.
