Back in the day, searching through the record store stacks was the best. It was easy to spend hour after hour, flipping through vinyl albums, cassettes, and CDs while looking for that prized discovery. And that’s just what we wanted to dive into here below. We wanted to explore three songs we always sought out. Indeed, these are three one-hit wonders from the 1970s I remember hunting for rabidly in my local record store.
“Mississippi Queen” by Mountain from ‘Climbing!’ (1970)
Sometimes you just want to rock. Sometimes you just need to hear those buzzing guitars, those loud vocals, and those heavy rhythms. Well, whenever that is the case, just go to your local record store and seek out the 1970 number “Mississippi Queen” by Mountain. Few songs will get your skeleton shaking quite as heartily. Few songs will rattle the rooftops quite as much. Trust us, you’ll thank us.

“In The Summertime” by Mungo Jerry from ‘Electronically Tested’ (1970)
As soon as you hear this song once, you have to hear it again. Music is great for many things, but perhaps its top function is to share feelings. And this song certainly has a bouncy, flouncy, fun feeling to share. Songwriter Mungo Jerry takes the joy of the summer season, adds odd instruments like jugs and double bass, and he put it all together in a joyous track that many music fans simply can’t live without. Like us, they traveled to their local record shop and plunked down the money for the album. And like us, they never regretted it.
“The Boys Are Back In Town” by Thin Lizzy from ‘Jailbreak’ (1976)
Music is great for setting a mood. If you need an example of this, look no further than “The Boys Are Back In Town” by Thin Lizzy from the group’s 1976 LP, Jailbreak. If you’re ever reuniting with old friends, throwing a bachelor party, or just getting the work buddies together for a fun weekend, this is essential listening. That’s why back in the day, when any of these activities were on the docket, we sought out this tune for our ultimate playlist. Thin Lizzy knew what they were doing, and their legacy lives on today because of it.
