If you were a teenager anywhere between the early 90s and late 00s, you probably spent a lot of time at your local mall. Mall culture was a big thing among youths during that era, particularly in the United States, and tons of younginโs heard their favorite musicians and songs for the first time while loitering (or shopping, of course) at their local mall. Letโs take a look at just a few rock songs from 1992 that got some airplay over mall speakers that year.
โEven Flowโ by Pearl Jam from โTenโ
This alt-rock classic from Pearl Jam was a pretty big crossover radio hit for the band. It was all over the radio for a hot minute. Naturally, malls and shopping centers that year made use of โEven Flowโ for a while.

โEven Flowโ by Pearl Jam was a fast hit in 1992, peaking at No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock chart in the US.
โDriveโ by R.E.M. from โAutomatic For The Peopleโ
R.E.M. dished out this polished and beautifully produced track in 1992. And it was inescapable on the radio and anywhere public for a while. Not that anyone was complaining. I wouldnโt be surprised if many a teen mall rat heard โDriveโ while loitering at the mall with their friends and became R.E.M. fans soon after.
โDriveโ by R.E.M. was an international success when it was released. The Queen-inspired song made it to No. 1 on the US Alternative Airplay chart. It also reached No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, among other international charts.
โFriday Iโm In Loveโ by The Cure from โWishโ
The Cure brought their gothic rock energy from the 80s to the 90s with this 1992 venture. Today, โFriday Iโm In Loveโ is still one of their biggest fan favorites. You can’t beat this sweet but still very on-brand love song from The Cure. And it was palatable enough for malls to play it over their speakers.
This entry on our list of rock songs from 1992 that you likely heard at the mall was a No. 18 hit on the Hot 100. It was also a No. 2 hit on the UK Airplay chart.
