3 Times Bruce Springsteen Captured the American Dream in Song

Bruce Springsteen is a musician uniquely and directly connected with America. While his iconic tune “Born In The U.S.A.” is more of a criticism of war and veteran treatment than it is an overtly patriotic tune, The Boss is still considered quite a patriotic figure in heartland rock. And the following three Bruce Springsteen songs are the most definitive tunes about the American dream in his discography. Let’s take a look!

1. “Born In The U.S.A.”

This one’s a shoo-in. If anything, “Born In The U.S.A.” is Bruce Springsteen’s most direct song about the American dream and one of his most popular songs period. This 1984 rock and roll classic is as anthemic as it gets, and many listeners have mistaken the song to be a glorifying tune about the American dream.

This song is definitely about the American dream, but not in the way some listeners might think. “Born In The U.S.A.” is a fairly critical song about the treatment of Vietnam veterans following the war and their struggle to survive after returning home. It’s a disillusioned, haunting tune that shines a light on the hard times that vets experienced after returning home from the Vietnam War, including economic devastation, lack of support, and the pain of dealing with PTSD.

2. “This Hard Land”

This standout 1998 song from the box set Tracks is a fan favorite, and it is also a favorite Springsteen’s. In fact, The Boss said that “This Hard Land” was one of his best songs to never make it to a proper album. That’s pretty easy to agree with.

This song is about two farmers who struggle to make ends meet with their crops and cattle in the great American southwestern desert. Instead of giving up, the two devise a way to make their dreams a reality. It’s a hopeful, optimistic song about hard-working Americans in the face of adversity.

3. “Land Of Hope And Dreams”

Bruce Springsteen has often been critical of the less-than-ideal aspects of American culture, but this song shows him celebrating the American dream in a very hopeful way: With its people at the center of it all. 

“Land Of Hope And Dreams” is a celebration of community and the diversity of the United States as a whole. Springsteen croons about saints, sinners, the broken-hearted, the sweet souls departed, and how all of this country’s people need to work together to do what is right.
