The vast majority of popular songs through the years have boasted somewhat traditional songwriting, opting to include (at least) a chorus and a verse or two. These famous classic rock songs, however, completely lack a chorus, and they’re still incredible songs without standard song structure. Let’s take a look and maybe get inspired to pen some non-traditional tunes, shall we?
1. “Tangled Up In Blue” by Bob Dylan
Rather than feature a chorus, Bob Dylan opted to use short and repetitive refrains in the song “Tangled Up In Blue”. It was a wise choice, and it’s also not the first time Dylan has used this songwriting method in his work. If you want to pack a folk tune with as much verbage as possible, this method works well and gives the “illusion” of a chorus to separate sections within a song.

2. “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen
One of the most famous classic rock songs without a chorus of all time, you just can’t beat “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. In fact, the complete lack of a traditional song structure is part of what makes this addictive, sing-along-friendly rock opera such a bop.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” is an episodic song that is broken up into specific sections, almost like miniature songs within a larger song. That setup worked beautifully for this narrative rock tune, and it doesn’t sound like a mashup of elements. Rather, everything works together beautifully.
3. “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane
A song that is a definitive piece of work in psychedelic rock history, “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane completely lacks a chorus. Instead of giving the listener some payoff with a chorus, the whole of the song is a slow crescendo that explodes with instrumentation and Grace Slick’s vocals at the very end of the song. It’s unique and truly brilliant, in my opinion.
4. “Happiness Is A Warm Gun” by The Beatles
The Beatles often used simple songwriting structures in their songs. They knew how to put together a pop tune that sold, after all. However, the 1968 track “Happiness Is A Warm Gun” is a bit of an underrated addition to our list of classic rock songs that lack a chorus.
Plenty of the Fab Four’s later work leaned toward avant-garde songwriting structures, including this lovely little song. However, it doesn’t get as much love as their other tracks that lack a chorus, such as “Yesterday” or “Long And Winding Road”.
