4 Incredible Modern (And Not-So-Modern) Covers of Buddy Holly Songs

Buddy Hollyโ€™s music is as timeless as it gets, and plenty of famous musicians have delivered covers of the rock and roll legendโ€™s songs. Letโ€™s take a look at a few of the very best!

1. โ€œIโ€™m Gonna Love You Tooโ€ by Blondie

Blondie released their stellar cover of Buddy Hollyโ€™s famed hit โ€œIโ€™m Gonna Love You Tooโ€ back in 1978 for the album Parallel Lines. The original track was already pretty upbeat, but Blondie added even more warm vibes to the song.

The production on this cover is also quite incredible compared to the simplistic original song from two decades prior. The addition of the organ and distorted guitar was a smart move. This is a really great modernization of a rock and roll classic.

2. โ€œDearestโ€ by The Black Keys

Buddy Holly covers donโ€™t get better than this. And we totally get why The Black Keysโ€™ rendition of โ€œDearestโ€ in 2011 was added to the soundtrack of the film Juno. This cover was also part of a covers compilation titled Rave On Buddy Holly, and itโ€™s a standout addition to that collection.

The original version of this song was very basic, yet honest. It featured Hollyโ€™s vocals and a simple electric guitar. The Black Keys cranked up the reverb for their cover, and it successfully brought the hit into a new century.

3. โ€œWords Of Loveโ€ by The Beatles

Unless you were around when this cover was released, or youโ€™re a diehard Beatles fan, you might not know that the Fab Four covered the beloved Buddy Holly song โ€œWords Of Loveโ€. Naturally, this addition to Beatles For Sale is a beautiful ode to one of the grandfathers of rock and roll. Those vocal harmonies just canโ€™t be beat, and this cover will soothe your soul in the best way.

4. โ€œEverydayโ€ by Fiona Apple and Jon Brion

2011 was the year of Buddy Holly covers, apparently. โ€œEverydayโ€ by Fiona Apple and Jon Brion was released as part of Rave On Buddy Holly. Where many Buddy Holly covers add a more sunshine vibe to the original material, Apple and Brion opted to take things down a notch with a more mellow version of โ€œEverydayโ€.
