The List

4 Rock Songs From 1976 That Give Me Instant Goosebumps Every Time

It doesnโ€™t take much for a piece of music to move me to goosebumps, even if Iโ€™m objectively not a fan of what Iโ€™m hearing. Something about the music itself moves past my personal tastes and opinions and hits me right to the bone, sometimes embarrassingly so. But I have no shame in admitting that these four rock songs from 1976 never fail to give me chills on my arms and legs, no matter how often I listen.

โ€œWild Mountain Honeyโ€ by Steve Miller Band

Kicking off this list of goosebump-inducing rock songs from 1976 is โ€œWild Mountain Honeyโ€ by Steve Miller Band. This deep cut is often overshadowed by other tracks from the same album, Fly Like An Eagle, like the title track and โ€œTake The Money And Runโ€. However, โ€œWild Mountain Honeyโ€ deserves just as much love, and not just because it sounds like the sonic interpretation of what getting goosebumps feels like.

โ€œMore Than A Feelingโ€ by Boston

Bostonโ€™s 1976 release, โ€œMore Than A Feelingโ€, is equal parts nostalgic, powerful, inspiring, and just plain fun to hear. The emotional dynamics between the mellow, subdued verses and the driving choruses never fail to leave me with goosebumps. What other reaction am I supposed to have while I hear Brad Delp soar into his falsetto as he sings โ€œI close my eyes, and I slipped awayโ€?

โ€œAmerican Girlโ€ by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Part of what makes Tom Petty & The Heartbreakersโ€™ 1976 debut album cut, โ€œAmerican Girlโ€, so goosebump-inducing is knowing, in hindsight, what the band was tapping into with this iconic track. This particular song came to define a specific subgenre of rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll that Tom Petty and his band helped pioneer. That in and of itself is powerful enough to send shivers up and down the spineโ€”at least for me it is.

โ€œCrazy On Youโ€ by Heart

Finally, Iโ€™ll wrap up my list of iconic rock songs from 1976 that never fail to give me goosebumps with โ€œCrazy On Youโ€, a classic by Heart. This song is a staggering display of both Wilson sistersโ€™ talents. First, we hear Nancy Wilson absolutely shredding on acoustic guitar. Then, the rest of the band comes in, cueing the first round of goosebumps. The second begins when Ann Wilson comes in on vocals, and they just continue throughout the rest of the song.
