5 Iconic Films About Country Music That You Should Watch Immediately

The country music industry is full of inspiring rags-to-riches stories, as well as shocking and controversial tales of starsโ€™ rise to fame. These five iconic films about country music quite beautifully explore the real-life struggles (as well as fictional depictions) of stardom that country artists have likely experienced through the years.

1. โ€˜Walk The Lineโ€™ (2005)

When it comes to iconic country music films, this biopic about Johnny Cash is a notable favorite among fans. The film follows a somewhat exaggerated depiction of country legend Johnny Cashโ€™s rise to fame, struggles with addiction, and relationship with June Carter. Joaquin Phoenix did an amazing job portraying Cash, and his singing chops arenโ€™t half bad, either.

2. โ€˜George & Tammyโ€™ (2022)

This 2022 film stars Jessica Chastain as Tammy Wynette and Michael Shannon as George Jones. Another great biopic on this list, George & Tammy explores the tumultuous lives of a famed country music star and the young talented woman who fell in love with him. Itโ€™s beautifully written, and Chastainโ€™s performance was particularly engaging.

3. โ€˜Coal Minerโ€™s Daughterโ€™ (1980)

Creating a film about the life of the larger-than-life Loretta Lynn was no easy feat. However, the filmmakers behind the 1980 film Coal Minerโ€™s Daughter did a pretty stellar job. Sissy Spacek portrayed the iconic Lynn in the film, and we canโ€™t imagine anyone else playing the country legend quite as well. The film explores Lynnโ€™s life as a poor young singer in Kentucky, including her marriage, motherhood, and eventual rise in the country music industry.

4. โ€˜Crazy Heartโ€™ (2009)

This fictional film didnโ€™t explore the life of a real-life country star, but weโ€™re sure at least a few country legends out there can relate to the struggle of Otis Blake (Jeff Bridges). The award-winning film follows the life of a former country music singer and his battle with addictionโ€ฆ and himself. Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal deliver career-defining performances in this film.

5. โ€˜Tender Merciesโ€™ (1983)

Few Robert Duvall films are bad, but Tender Mercies is particularly good. This 1983 fictional film explores the life of a struggling country music singer named Mac Sledge. The talented artist must work at a motel to make ends meet, where he falls in love with the motelโ€™s owner and bonds with her young son. Itโ€™s a real tear-jerker and one of the best country music films out there.
