5 Nirvana Deep Cuts That Never Got the Spotlight They Deserved

Grunge band Nirvanaโ€™s discography isnโ€™t exactly large, but itโ€™s large enough to host a few deep cuts that even diehard fans may have never heard before. Letโ€™s take a look at just a few Nirvana deep cuts that we think are worth discovering (or revisiting)!

1. โ€œOld Ageโ€

โ€œOld Ageโ€ is a rare example of Nirvanaโ€™s more relaxed side, as well as Kurt Cobainโ€™s sentimentality. This outtake from Nevermind could easily be the bandโ€™s most underrated track, but thatโ€™s completely up to fan opinion. Those hooks are on another level, though.

2. โ€œCurmudgeonโ€

This B-side to โ€œLithiumโ€ deserves way more love, and we have to say it is one of our favorite Nirvana deep cuts out there. โ€œCurmudgeonโ€ is a raw, energetic track that could have easily ended up on In Utero. Nirvana doesnโ€™t have many songs one could describe as anthems, but this one comes close.

3. โ€œI Hate Myself And Want To Dieโ€

This โ€œPennyroyal Teaโ€ B-side is on the more playful side of Nirvanaโ€™s discographyโ€ฆ if you consider distorted guitars, gritty lyrics, and dark song titles playful. Fun fact: โ€œI Hate Myself And Want To Dieโ€ was originally going to be In Uteroโ€™s album title.

4. โ€œOpinionโ€

Out of all the Nirvana deep cuts on this list, โ€œOpinionโ€ is a little bit of a mystery. This song was never recorded in a studio, and it was never performed at any of Nirvanaโ€™s live shows. There are a few post-Cobain versions of it, but the true version is a bootlegged solo demo that Cobain played on a radio show.

Itโ€™s a stellar song about Cobainโ€™s dislike for the media, and itโ€™s a great example of what the famed frontman could do with just his voice and an acoustic guitar. Though, we already know that from MTV Unplugged.

5. โ€œVerse Chorus Verseโ€

Nirvana deep cuts donโ€™t get better than this, folks. โ€œVerse Chorus Verseโ€ is an outtake from Nevermind that never made it to the album, but itโ€™s become quite a fan favorite over the last couple of decades. Fortunately, this charming track was released with the bandโ€™s With The Lights Out comp album.
