When it comes to that California sound, people often think of Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Beach Boys, and The Doors. One more band that is often associated with the Golden State is the epitome of California rock ‘n’ roll, Eagles. Don Henley and Eagles‘ music and likeness fall into a lot of different categories. However, above all of those categories is the group’s iconic California sound, and one album that solidified them as a California band is, of course, Hotel California.
Hotel California is arguably Eagles’ most successful album of all time. Following its release in 1976, the album peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and held the top spot for eight non-consecutive weeks. Several tracks on the album also garnered major success, as the album’s infamous title track, “Hotel California”, and “New Kid in Town” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Needless to say, Eagles’ Hotel California was and still is an enormous success, and according to Don Henley, there was one singular word that helped make it so.
The One Word Don Henley Thought Fired “The Imaginations of People”
No one thing ever contributes to success. Rather, it is a culmination of factors that propel a product or person forward. Don Henley agrees with that notion, and for him, one of those factors was the simple word “California.” Specifically, Henley told Rolling Stone, “I’ve learned over the years that one word, ‘California,’ carries with it all kinds of connotations, powerful imagery, mystique, etc., that fires the imaginations of people in all corners of the globe.”
“There’s a built-in mythology that comes with that word, an American cultural mythology that has been created by both the film and the music industry. But I think the success of the album was due to a combination of things that all coalesced at that point in time, ” added Henley.
Henley is not wrong about the magnificence and folklore surrounding the word “California.” For context, some other massive hits to include that state in their title are “California Girls”, “Californication”, “Going To California”, “California Love”, and a plethora of others. While implementing the word for chart success was certainly not Henley and Eagles’ goal, it surely helped them out in that regard. Well, according to Don Henley, that is. Nevertheless, Henley was certainly on to something in his comments, as the state of California and the allure of it seemingly sell records hand over fist.
