Beck is a creature of habit. Prior to the release of a new album (and subsequently, the beginning of a new tour), he has been known to round up the band and play a surprise show for a few very lucky fans to test out new material. Such was the case last night at Los Angeles club the Echo.
Fans both old and new were sure to be sonically satisfied in some way or another, as Beck played a set that spanned most of his 15-year career. The set also included some drastic reworking of old Beck favorites, such as a heavily distorted makeover of “Lost Cause.”
Beck also debuted the majority of the songs from his upcoming album Modern Guilt. The album, which still has no official release date, is a project Beck worked on with Danger Mouse (when does this guy sleep?) and what he considers “the most intensive work [he’s] ever done on anything.” The album is set to have a British rock vibe a la 1960, and should be a bit of a departure from Beck’s nine previous albums.
Several of the album’s songs are already online, such as the conspiracy-laden “Chemtrails” (no, it’s not about drugs—Google “chemtrails” and see for yourself) that could have just as easily been a’60s-era Pink Floyd outtake. As Beck has now given his new album the live treatment, keep an eye out for it online soon.
