Essential Fugazi: 4 Songs That Post-Hardcore Fans Must Know

If youโ€™re getting into Fugazi and post-hardcore in general, you can basically start anywhere in their discography. Their debut record Repeater from 1990 all the way through The Argument from 2001 contain essential songs, but there are a few tracks that I would consider โ€œessentialโ€ Fugazi. Letโ€™s take a look!

1. โ€œBlueprintโ€

A killer track from the bandโ€™s debut record, โ€œBlueprintโ€ was composed by Guy Picciotto. Not only is this song a standout track from Repeater, but itโ€™s one that stands out among the bandโ€™s entire discography.

โ€œBlueprintโ€ is on the artsier side of Fugazi, and Iโ€™m not complaining, either. The melodies are on another level with this one. The lyrics โ€œNever mind whatโ€™s been selling / Itโ€™s what youโ€™re buying and receiving undefiledโ€ are simply iconic.

2. โ€œSmallpox Championโ€

Essential Fugazi songs often have a few somewhat vague elements: Aggressive, in-your-face lyricism mixed with artfully produced melodies and overall songwriting. You definitely get that package with โ€œSmallpox Championโ€ from Fugaziโ€™s 1993 album In On The Kill Taker. The start of this song almost sounds like something from Sonic Youth.

Part of what makes Fugazi so good is their ability to kick off a song with fast, chaotic movements, only to tie it together with a beautiful melody by the end. โ€œSmallpox Championโ€ definitely showcases that talent.

3. โ€œBed For The Scrapingโ€

This track from Fugaziโ€™s 1995 album Red Medicine is one of many influential tracks from that very record. Considering that album was such a commercial success, itโ€™s also one of Fugaziโ€™s more accessible works.

โ€œBed For The Scrapingโ€ is a perfect blend of melody and noise. Iโ€™d be bold enough to say this song is one of Fugaziโ€™s most anthemic pieces of work.

4. โ€œFull Disclosureโ€

Essential Fugazi songs include their later works, and โ€œFull Disclosureโ€ from the bandโ€™s last record The Argument is no exception. The whole of that album is essential listening for any post-hardcore fan, but something stands out in โ€œFull Disclosureโ€.

This track has wild basslines, a souring guitar track, and an ebb and flow that can only be heard in masterful songwriting efforts. This oneโ€™s a real gem, and itโ€™s almost pop-adjacent. That chorus is unbelievably catchy, too.
