Fender Unveils Secret Weapon


In celebration of the Jazzmasterโ€™s 50th year, Fender is manufacturing an Elvis Costello Signature model. The Costello Jazzmaster replicates the Jazzmaster that he played while recording the 1977 album, My Aim Is True.

โ€œThe original guitar this model is based upon has been refinished, rebuilt, and has a new neck with Elvisโ€™ name inlaid into the fingerboard, so we had to reference a lot of โ€˜70s-era photography, as well as Elvisโ€™ personal anecdotes, to get it right,โ€ said Justin Norvell, Fender marketing manager for electric guitars. โ€œElvis dialed in the finer detailsโ€”the points that photos canโ€™t tell you, like the feel and setup and the exact hue and luster of the finishโ€”things only he would know.โ€

Costello had this to say about his beloved Jazzmaster, โ€œThis is a brutal-sounding guitar. It suits the way I play. But this guitarโ€”itโ€™s had a funny life. Iโ€™ve done all sorts of different music, but whenever itโ€™s involved electric guitar, I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s one record Iโ€™ve made on which the Jazzmaster doesnโ€™t feature somewhere.โ€
