Josh Freese, the drummer of the Foo Fighters, recently announced that he is departing from Dave Grohl and the band just two years after joining. Freese replaced Taylor Hawkins in 2023 after Hawkins tragically passed away from a combination of pharmaceutical drugs. Since joining the Foo Fighters, Josh Freese has participated in all of their live shows, tours, and special events. However, according to his recent Instagram post, that is no longer the case.
The decision to leave was not Freese’s. Rather, Freese divulged that the Foo Fighters wanted to part ways with him, as they decided “to go in a different direction with their drummer.” Given the short time frame of Freese’s career, this decision is surprising. Although Dave Grohl and the rest of the band seemingly have a reason behind it. Nevertheless, Freese does not know what that reason is, nor what it seemingly could be.

Josh Freese Makes Official Statement
Josh Freese took to Instagram on Friday, May 16, to announce the news. He wrote in the post, “The Foo Fighters called me on Monday to let me know they’ve decided ‘to go in a direction with their drummer.’ No reason was given. Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off the stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band.”
“In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry —just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine. Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters’ list.”
Per Josh Freese’s comments, the situation is incredibly ambiguous. So, as of now, Freese’s dismal from the band is unclear. Furthermore, his replacement is also entirely up in the air at this time. According to their website, the Foo Fighters do have some time to find a replacement, as their next live performance won’t take place until October of 2025. The Foo Fighters have yet to make an official statement on the matter.
