On Sunday, May 11, American Idol aired the first of two Disney-themed episodes. Things are getting down to the wire for the show, as they recently narrowed down the contestants. Here’s when fans can expect the next episode.
Tonight, May 12, American Idol continues the Disney theme, presenting the Top 5 who were chosen on Sunday. The episode airs on ABC at 8 p.m. ET, so make sure to mark your calendars.

May 11 was, of course, Mother’s Day in the U.S., so the theme included songs about mothers and family. However, for the next episode, the theme will revolve around heroes and villains. Fans should expect many more theatrics and sensational performances from the Top 5.
The American Idol Grand Finale will air on Sunday, May 18. Fans are now in charge of who moves forward through online voting.
Previously, American Idol Chose Its Top 5 Contestants
After Sunday’s episode, the American Idol judges whittled the group down to the final five. Slater Nalley, Breanna Nix, John Foster, Jamal Roberts, and Thunderstorm Artis impressed Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie enough to move on to the next round.
Unfortunately, that means it’s the end of the road for Gabby Samone and Mattie Pruitt. Breanna Nix is now the only female singer on the show, and will likely face some tough scrutiny if she wants to win over the hearts of America and the judges.
Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda will return as a mentor during the second Disney-themed episode. He previously helped the contestants through rehearsals, assisting them in presenting their best performances. Additionally, he will take an opportunity to serenade the audience alongside the contestants.
Following tonight’s episode, the final Top 3 contestants will be chosen. Two more will be sent home after America votes for their favorites, bringing the show closer to the live finale.
As for the show’s structure, each contestant will take the stage twice, performing two songs that fit the theme. Voters will have plenty of performances to think about as they cast their votes for the next American Idol.
