J-Kwon’s Work With Shaboozey on “A Bar Song (Tipsy) Withdrawn From Grammy Nominations

Wanting to find the perfect blend between hip-hop and country music, Shaboozey spent the last decade releasing three studio albums. While gaining praise for Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die, the singer seemed to dominate the genre when releasing Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going. Hitting shelves back in May, the album came packed with 12 songs. But when it came to “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”, it seemed to strike a chord with country music fans. Seeming to take over the airwaves, the song featured snippets of J-Kwon’s 2004 hit “Tipsy.” While gaining 2025 Grammy nominations for his contributions, it appears the Grammys withdrew them. 

Going into the 2025 Grammy Awards, the Shaboozey hit gained nominations for Song of the Year and Best Country Song. While thrilled about the success of the song, if it wins, the writers for the original “Tipsy” song will only receive certificates, not a Grammy award. 

According to the Grammy Awards, it isn’t uncommon for nominations to be withdrawn. “Each year, the Recording Academy makes adjustments to the nominations list as-necessary after the list is first published. Common changes are often the result of updated credits and may include spelling corrections, title modifications, and the addition of nominees who were not included in the original submission, among other revisions.”

Shaboozey Spends 19 Weeks On Top Of The Billboard Hot 100

When “Tipsy” originally released in 2004, it featured writers Joe Kent, Mark Williams, and J-Kwon. Looking at “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”, the country hit included lines like “One, here comes the two to the three to the four” and “Everybody at the bar gettin’ tipsy.” With fans loving the throwback to the early 2000s, J-Kwon seemed at peace with what they created. 

Although having the Grammy nominations withdrawn, J-Kwon admitted he was well compensated for his contributions. “I got a crazy percentage. Let’s say it like this, we did that together, and I’m proud of him.”

As for “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”, it not only garnered high praise from fans but it spent 19 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. And not that long ago, Shaboozey opened the 2024 Billboard Music Awards with a stellar performance of the hit.
