Kate Cosentino and Tiana Goss Go Toe-to-Toe with “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” on ‘The Voice’

The Voice hopefuls Kate Cosentino and Tiana Goss went head-to-head, toe-to-toe, even heel-toe, heal-toe during Monday night’s (April 3) Battle Rounds.

A night of duking it out, the Battle Rounds sees the show’s coaches—artists Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Niall Horan, and Chance the Rapper—pit two of their team members against each other for a chance to advance in the competition.

For Team Niall’s showcase, the former One Direction member chose a fun, dance-filled duel between Kate and Tiana. They performed in tandem Cyndi Lauper’s ’80s hit “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” a song that allowed them to put their voices on full display while also showing off their moves.

The result was a foot-tapping duet, a quirky, but lovable display of spins, shimmies, and sways. The camera panned to show nothing but smiles from the four seated coaches. Their performance closed with a pose, a pop of the foot, and applause all around.

Chance was the first to give his praise, saying he loved the arrangement and thought the two of them “smashed the choreography.” He singled out Kate, telling her he thought she had a slight edge over Tiana in the battle.

Clarkson gave them props for a difficult song, calling the result an “even playing field,” not one had outdone the other in the performance. Shelton, however, rallied for Tiana, saying her part of the song was “on pitch and in-the-pocket.”

It all came down to their coach’s decision. Horan was pleased with their effort, telling them he was proud of both of them. “Based off what she can give to the competition,” he ultimately said, “I think the winner of the battle is Kate.”

Just as Tiana was saying her goodbyes to the coaches, Chance hit his button for an unexpected steal to move Tiana onto his team. “I saw potential,” he explained off-stage. “She had soul to her voice and she had a stage presence. I’m excited to see what she’s going to do on Team Chance.”
