Luke Bryan Discusses Surging Trend of “Idiots” Throwing Things at Artists: “Let’s Just Showcase Entitlement”

While fans packed the North Dakota State Fair to watch Luke Bryan perform, one person decided to take their excitement a little too far when they decided to throw an object at the singer. At first, many believed the object was a ball. And with it hitting Bryan in the face, the topic took over headlines. Thankfully, Bryan wasn’t injured during the moment, although he did look a little upset over the incident. Still, continuing to perform “Country Girl”, Bryan recently opened up about the viral moment and revealed what really hit him. 

Appearing on the Bobby Bones Show, the topic of the viral incident eventually took over the conversation. And according to Bryan, the object wasn’t a ball but some sort of hacky sack. “It was this little beach ball thing. Like a hacky sack. When I’m sitting there singing, and I’m just doing my deal and it comes into my frame, obviously I flinched. It got me.” While softer than a baseball, the country star worried more about the idea of fans believing it was okay to throw objects at artists.

Luke Bryan Promises “This Is Not A New Thing”

When asked to give an official statement about the moment, Bryan took a different approach, shining a light on how those fans were “idiots.” “My official statement is people throw things at artists and they’re idiots. It’s the deterioration of the moral fabric of how your a** ought to act. This is not a new thing. That was a great thing to get thrown at me. It was a little beach ball. I’ve had $1,100 cell phones get thrown at me.”

In the past, fans used to throw items of clothing, a hat, or even a shot of Fireball. But now, some threw caution to the wind when tossing their phones on stage. And with a phone easily costing over $1,000, Bryan explained, “They put it on video and they throw it up there. Let’s just showcase entitlement. ‘I’ve got an $1,100 iPhone that I’m gonna throw at an artist to get a picture.’”

Fans seemed to agree with Bryan’s statement on hurling objects at singers, with comments reading, “People should respect the artist and enjoy the artist doing their job to entertain you. How would you like if someone through something at your face? ( think about it ).”

For Bryan, the hacky sack may have been harmless, but the behavior it represented was anything but, as he urged fans to leave the tossing to the beach.
