Paul Simon: Live In New York City

Paul Simon
Live In New York City
(Concord Music Group)
Rating: 4 stars

At the age of 70, Paul Simon can still hold an audience spellbound until late in the evening. With a multi-cultural, multi-talented and a multi-rhythmic band behind him, the songwriting legend does exactly that at this special club gig at New York Cityโ€™s Webster Hall, (once known for itโ€™s cheesy dance parties, but now a respectable venue.) New songs like โ€œRewrite,โ€ โ€œThe Afterlife,โ€ โ€œDazzling Blue,โ€ and โ€œSo Beautiful Or So Whatโ€ share the set list with underperformed fan favorites โ€“ like the arching, lyrical โ€œHearts And Bonesโ€ and Graceland deep cuts like โ€œThat Was Your Mother,โ€ โ€œGumbootsโ€ and โ€œCrazy Love, Vol. II.โ€ The highlight of the night goes to โ€œThe Only Living Boy In New York,โ€ one of the most poignant Simon and Garfunkel songs in a very poignant catalog. Too bad Artie wasnโ€™t around to flesh out this โ€œneighborhood concert.โ€
