Iconic shoe company Converse recently recruited N.E.R.D. star Pharrell Williams, Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas and indie darling Santogold to star in their latest advertising campaign, โThree Artists, One Song.โ The track recorded by the trio could be streamed online in June, but the video just hit the net this week.
โMy Drive Thruโ combines the strengths of the unlikely trio; Pharrellโs signature Neptunesโ beats and a few well-placed โohsโ, Santogoldโs genre-bending vocals and Casablancasโ Strokes-style singing all blend well into a track that could easily transcend the sneaker commercial into summer radio hit. The black-and-white video features cartoon-esque depictions of the artists dancing with plenty of close-ups of their beloved Chuck Taylors.
Santogold, who has seen a recent explosion in popularity, sees the project as positive for her career and rejects the notion that she has โsold out.โ “It’s like one of the main ways to get our music heard now and so it’s stupid for artists to shy away from that,” she said. She goes on to describe the track, in which the three artists were able to โdo their own separate thingโฆ with personalities separate.โ
Converse isnโt going to ease up on the campaign, which celebrates the companyโs 100th anniversary with โMy Drive Thru.โ Other artists lined up to salute their favorite shoes include Fiery Furnaces, Does it Offend You, Yeah? and Care Bears on Fire. The โMy Drive Thruโ track is a free download and the video can be found here:
