Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Band Plays First Show Since Death of Drummer of More Than 50 Years

For the majority of Frank Beard’s life, he spent it on stage alongside the rock band ZZ Top. Having showcased his skills as a drummer, he was celebrated by the music industry when inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside the band. Sadly, Beard passed away on August 17 at 77. Although he continued to tour with ZZ Top, the band cancelled performances after Beard’s health declined. With the group losing a longtime member, Billy Gibbons celebrated his legacy during a recent concert. 

Returning to the stage for the first time since Beard’s passing, Gibbons was ready to get back to entertaining fans. But first, he introduced the musician who would be taking over for Beard – Michael Monahan. “I guess some of you probably know there’s a new man in town. In fact, it all started a little while back. Elwood [Francis, bassist] and I got an unexpected call from our dear Frank Beard, our dear drummer for 50 years.”

Worried about Beard’s health, Gibbons added that he was stunned by his drummer’s statement. “I’ve never heard him admit, he said, ‘My bass drum foot’s a little weak. Can you get my man to take over?’ I said, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, he’s been doing pretty good.’ Frank said, ‘Yeah, that’s what worries me.’”

How Frank Beard Helped Keep ZZ Top On “Top”

While ZZ Top made its triumphant return to the stage, Gibbons sought to honor the drummer who traveled the world with them. More than a musician, Beard was a friend. “Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top.” 

Noting the important role Beard played in the band, ZZ Top spent its time at the Moody Theater in Texas performing hits like “Got Me Under Pressure,” “Jesus Just Left Chicago,” “Cheap Sunglasses,” and “La Grange.”

With ZZ Top officially back, fans believed it was the best and only way to keep Beard’s memory alive. And according to one fan, “ZZ Top are road dogs. They built their reputation as a live act. The music deserves to be played, the tunes heard. Celebrate Dusty and Frank. TIL THE WHEELS FALL OFF!”
