The 1976 documentary Heartworn Highways chronicled an important moment in country history, featuring rare on- and off-stage footage of many of the genre’s most respected outlaws and visionaries at crucial moments in their careers. Directed by James Szalapski, the film was shot in Texas and Tennessee and only saw the light of day a handful of times before its wider, enthusiastically received release in 1981. Since then, the film, which includes appearances by Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle and many more, has become an essential piece of country mythology, earning a cult following among those lucky enough to have seen it.
Now, Light in the Attic Records is making it easier than ever to enjoy both the film and its accompanying soundtrack, re-releasing the documentary and giving the soundtrack deluxe CD and vinyl treatments, all slated to be available June 24.
