The Evolution of Dolly Parton: 5 Career Milestones

Everybody talks about Dolly Partonโ€™s famous debut of โ€œI Will Always Love Youโ€ and the first time she performed at the Grand Ole Opry at just 13 years old. But what about the lesser-known milestones that significantly contributed to her legacy? Letโ€™s explore the evolution of Dolly Parton as a musician (and actress) with five career milestones!

1. โ€œPuppy Loveโ€

Dolly Partonโ€™s many career milestones started with the debut of her very first single, โ€œPuppy Loveโ€, in 1957. Parton wrote the tune with her uncle when she was only 11 years old. The song was released with the B-side โ€œGirl Left Aloneโ€ via Goldband Records in 1959.

While โ€œPuppy Loveโ€ didnโ€™t earn Parton any substantial commercial or charting success, it marked the beginning of what would become a legendary music career.

2. โ€œSomething Fishyโ€

The release of โ€œSomething Fishyโ€ in 1967 marked an upward trajectory for Dolly Parton. She managed to hit the Billboard country charts with the song, which hit no. 17, and the song โ€œDumb Blondeโ€, which hit no. 24. Her first album Hello, Iโ€™m Dolly was released that year as well.

3. โ€œJoleneโ€

With 12 records already under her belt by 1974, the release of Jolene and its iconic title track changed everything for Parton. โ€œJoleneโ€ is by far Partonโ€™s most well-known hit song, and it catapulted to no. 1 on the country charts when it was first released.

โ€œJoleneโ€ also hit no. 60 on the Hot 100 chart as well. From then on, Parton pummeled the charts with hit after hit, from โ€œI Will Always Love Youโ€ to โ€œThe Bargain Storeโ€ and more.

4. The Film โ€˜9 To 5โ€™

Dolly Partonโ€™s career milestones donโ€™t solely involve music. Parton made her film debut in 1980 with the comedy movie that famously birthed her hit song โ€œ9 To 5โ€. She contributed the song to the filmโ€™s soundtrack, and she absolutely nailed her role in the movie alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Parton got a ton of award nominations for her role after the film was released. And even though she didnโ€™t win any of those awards, she did nab two Grammy awards for the song itself.

5. Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction

Dolly Parton dominated country music for decades, then went on to dominate rock music at the age of 76. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, then released her rock album Rockstar in 2023. Who knows what sheโ€™ll do next? We canโ€™t wait to find out!
