The King is Dead.

Billboard is reporting this week that pop diva Mariah Carey will surpass Elvis Presley on the all-time list of โ€œNo. 1s in the Rock Eraโ€ with her newest single, โ€œTouch My Body.โ€ The chart-topper, her 18th, lands her in second place on the list, behind only The Beatles. And with the Fab Four maxing out at 20 No. 1s, Carey seems poised to take their spot on the listโ€”possibly even this year.

Depressed yet? Thereโ€™s more. Billboard also tells us that Madonna will surpass Presleyโ€™s top spot on the list of artists with the most Top 10s in the rock era this week. โ€œ4 Minutes,โ€ which features Justin Timberlake, will be the Material Girlโ€™s 37th track to crack the Top 10 in her 26-year career.

The one-two punches on the King came in no small part due to the tracksโ€™ unprecedented performances in download sales. Both scored more than 200,000 digital downloads this weekโ€”the first time two songs have done so since Nielsen began tracking online sales.ย
