โMy Sameโ is one of quite a few underrated songs from British soul singer Adeleโs debut album 19. The song was both written and produced by the singer, and it didnโt quite chart in the UK and the US. Still, itโs a fan-loved track that is always a treat to hear when Adele performs live. Thatโs why it might be surprising for some fans to learn that Adele removed โMy Sameโ from her setlist for a couple of years almost immediately after the album was released. The reason behind the temporary shelving might surprise you.
Why Adele Stopped Performing โMy Sameโ for a While
If you listen to the lyrics of โMy Sameโ, the meaning behind the song is quite direct and clear. The track is about Adeleโs best friend Laura Dockrill. She muses over how opposites can often attract when it comes to friendships.

โYou like to be so close, I like to be alone / I like to sit on chairs and you prefer the floor / Walking with each other / Think we’ll never match at all / But we do.โ Itโs a pretty crystal-clear love song about a dear friend.
Unfortunately, two friends once had a very serious falling-out after Adele had already recorded โMy Sameโ for 19. Itโs not clear what happened between the two. However, we do know that they stopped being close friends from the time Adele was recording 19 to after she released 21 in 2011.

Because of the breakup and the unexpected massive success of 19, Adele stopped performing โMy Sameโ for a few years until the pair finally rekindled their friendship.
Luckily, all is well today. The two settled their differences and became best friends once again. Adele is even the godmother of Lauraโs son, born in 2018. And according to Laura, Adele was the first person to identify her postpartum psychosis and get her help.
โShe recognized it in me, I was on the phone FaceTiming her and she was the first one to detect what I might have,โ said Laura in an interview with Radio 1 Newsbeat years ago.
Laura has since nurtured a very successful career as a poet and author. And Adele is, well, Adele. The singer/songwriter finally added โMy Sameโ back into the song rotation, though she usually opts to perform her bigger hits instead of the lesser-known songs from her earlier albums.ย
Itโs great when friendships heal, isnโt it?
