Ever wonder what it’s like to be in a band and constantly be asked the same interview questions over and over?
In a new interview with The Onion’s AV Club, They Might Be Giants’ John Flansburgh reflects on three decades of being interviewed. It’s an interesting peak into the mindset of the semi-famous.
Here’s an excerpt:
AVC: Have you guys ever pulled an OโReilly?
JF: I donโt think we have ever walked out of an interview. Itโs not like weโre the undisputed, chart-toppinโ alternative-rock bandโwe have to be advocates for what weโre doing.
AVC: Did you want to?
JF: Oh, probably every fifth one. Between me and my wife, thereโs this joke where Iโll be doing some fun interview, and Iโll get off the phone and be like, โThat guy was an idiot.โ A lot of times, interviews are like being asked a list of questions. Invariably, there will be this part where they think youโre a writer for Letterman: โJust off the top of your head, tell me the 10 most influential bands on you.โ And youโre actually asked to come up with a spontaneous list. Itโs like, โDude, Iโm not living in High Fidelity.โ
