Ever wonder what it’s like to be in a band and constantly be asked the same interview questions over and over?

In a new interview with The Onion’s AV Club, They Might Be Giants’ John Flansburgh reflects on three decades of being interviewed. It’s an interesting peak into the mindset of the semi-famous.

Here’s an excerpt:

AVC: Have you guys ever pulled an Oโ€™Reilly?

JF: I donโ€™t think we have ever walked out of an interview. Itโ€™s not like weโ€™re the undisputed, chart-toppinโ€™ alternative-rock bandโ€”we have to be advocates for what weโ€™re doing.

AVC: Did you want to?

JF: Oh, probably every fifth one. Between me and my wife, thereโ€™s this joke where Iโ€™ll be doing some fun interview, and Iโ€™ll get off the phone and be like, โ€œThat guy was an idiot.โ€ A lot of times, interviews are like being asked a list of questions. Invariably, there will be this part where they think youโ€™re a writer for Letterman: โ€œJust off the top of your head, tell me the 10 most influential bands on you.โ€ And youโ€™re actually asked to come up with a spontaneous list. Itโ€™s like, โ€œDude, Iโ€™m not living in High Fidelity.โ€
