What were you doing when you were 17? Chemistry tests? Soccer games? Scott James — the teenaged singer/songwriter whose new EP, Destinesia, brings to mind the sweeping, bare-boned folk of Jeff Buckley — has got you beat.

After graduating high school two years early to focus on music, James began working on his new EP with Grammy-winning producer Joe DiBlasi. This week, heโ€™s pushing the music video for “My Road,” one of the recordโ€™s best tracks. The clip alternates between shots of a cold, empty desert and a similarly depressing house, with the two worlds colliding during the final seconds.

โ€œIt’s about realizing that you’re trapped in a routine and are unaware that you’ve been just going through the motions each day,โ€ James tell us. โ€œWhen you finally realize what is happening, you decide that you are going to break free.”
