Watch Paul McCartney Discuss His Cordial Collaborative Relationship with Beatles Bandmate John Lennon

Paul McCartney says that when it came to collaborating with John Lennon on songs for The Beatles, the two rarely argued about changes one or the other suggested making to a tune. In an interview clip McCartney recently posted on his YouTube channel, he reflected on these generally cordial songwriting sessions.

โ€œThere was never that much battling, because if someone said, โ€˜I like this better,โ€™ it was generally a better idea,โ€ McCartney explained. โ€œSo, youโ€™d give in to each otherโ€ฆ as long as it was a better idea.โ€

One case McCartney recalled on which he stood his ground was when he was working on โ€œEleanor Rigby,โ€ and he initially had a verse about a character named โ€œFather McCartney.โ€ Sir Paul didnโ€™t want to keep the name because he felt it made the song too personal, but he said Lennon initially disagreed with him. Eventually, McCartney said, Lennon relented, and they settled on the name โ€œMcKenzieโ€ by looking in the phone book.

Lennon Was โ€œa Good Collaboratorโ€

McCartney also noted that there was a friendly intimacy about how he and Lennon would sit facing each other with acoustic guitars while working on tunes.

โ€œWeโ€™re writing like [that] โ€ฆ and, you know, Iโ€™m coming up with a bit of a line, and then heโ€™s following it on, just ping-ponging ideas,โ€ he recalled. โ€œYou know, I look back on it and think, โ€˜Yeah, you were a good collaboratorโ€™ โ€ฆ At the time, it just felt good, and we respected each other, you know?โ€

Regarding that mutual respect, McCartney pointed out that he felt a sense of pride when Lennon would like a song heโ€™d written as is.

โ€œSometimes Iโ€™d bring something in and heโ€™d go, โ€˜Well, there you are. That’s it,โ€™โ€ he explained. โ€œAnd it was niceโ€ฆ โ€˜I just got the stamp of approval.โ€™โ€

Liking Each Otherโ€™s Songs

He remembered that one example was โ€œPaperback Writer.โ€

โ€œI’d pretty much worked it all out, like a letter. I’d written it all โ€ฆ and played it for him,โ€ McCartney recalled. โ€œAnd he says, โ€˜Great,โ€™ you know.โ€

He added, โ€œAnd Iโ€™d do that sometimes with his songs. โ€˜Nowhere Manโ€™ [was one of them]. โ€ฆ Heโ€™d play it through [and] Iโ€™d go, โ€˜Great, lovely.โ€™ And then that was that one done.โ€

McCartneyโ€™s Book The Lyrics

A paperback version of the book was released last month. The tome features profiles of more than 150 songs written or co-written by McCartney throughout his long music career.
