Remember When Aretha Franklin and Dean Martin Both Covered a Glen Campbell Hit in the Same Year?

In 1967, Glen Campbell released โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€. The title track of Campbellโ€™s sixth studio album, โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€ was written by John Hartford, who first released the song in 1967. Hartfordโ€™s version did not chart. However, it did lead Campbell to record โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€ after he heard Hartford sing the song.

โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€ remains one of Campbellโ€™s most noteworthy songs, even though it only became a Top 30 single for him. But two years later, two other artists, neither of them country, also put their own spin on โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€.

Aretha Franklinโ€™s version of โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€ is on her Soul โ€™69 record. Soul โ€™69 is a record of cover songs, including Sam Cookeโ€™s โ€œBring It On Home To Meโ€ and Bob Lindโ€™s โ€œElusive Butterflyโ€. Franklin released two singles from the record, both โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€ and a cover of The Miraclesโ€™ โ€œTracks Of My Tearsโ€. Neither did well for Franklin at radio, although โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€ did hit the Top 50 on Billboardโ€™s R&B chart.

Martin found more success with his take of โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€. Martinโ€™s cover of the Campbell classic is part of Martinโ€™s Gentle On My Mind album. That record was actually released in 1968. When Martin released the title track, it hit the Top 10 on Billboardโ€™s Adult Contemporary chart, making it a bigger hit for Dean than Campbell at the time.

Numerous other artists also released โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€. Patti Page had a Top 10 hit with the song in 1968. Nancy Wilson, Andy Williams, and Johnny Cash are just a few of the other artists who also recorded this iconic song. Still, itโ€™s Campbellโ€™s version that remains the most popular today. The first two Grammy Awards Campbell won throughout his career were for โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€.

The Story Behind โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€ by Glen Campbell

It was Dr. Zhivago, a movie from 1966, which inspired Hartford to write โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€.

โ€œIt was like a stream of consciousness,โ€ Hartford later says. Hartford finished the song in just 30 minutes. But he later admits even he doesnโ€™t understand why โ€œGentle On My Mindโ€ became such a success.

ย โ€œIt violates all the principles of pop songwriting,โ€ he adds. โ€œItโ€™s a banjo tune. It has no chorus, [and] it has a lot of words, so that itโ€™s hard to sing.โ€

Gentle On My Mind is the first of Campbell’s seven consecutive albums (not counting his That Christmas Feeling record) to reach No. 1.
